5th Lean Six Sigma Symposium

The 5th ASQ-LI Lean Six-sigma symposium is once again being co-sponsored with Hofstra University and will be held at Hofstra University’s Cultural Center Theater on Friday, March 30, 2012 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm (please visit us at www.asqlongisland.org for more details).

Learn from Lean Six Sigma Master Blackbelts and Blackbelts about LSS applications to Agile Software Development, Effective Hospital management, FOD Critical Compliance, Transactional Processes and Estée Lauder Companies’ Melville Facility’s Journey of Lean. Also, enjoy a group activity on how to develop specifications.

The cost for attending the symposium is $150 ($200 non-members) with an early registration cost of $120 ($170 non-members) per person; a continental breakfast, lunch, and snacks for the networking session are included. The early registration ends March 9, 2012.
The symposium is expected to provide our members and corporate associates with useful information on strategies adopted by practicing Lean Six-Sigma professionals to achieve successful process and quality improvements.

The format of the symposium allows success stories to be presented by ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belts, and Practicing Black Belts on strategies and tools used to realize LSS implementation and concomitant bottom-line improvements in Health Care, Process, Manufacturing, and Service industries, including government. The planned topics are:

Topic #1: The Estée Lauder Companies’ Melville Facility’s Journey of Lean by Kim Willenbruch, Mfg Process Improvement Director, Estee Lauder Companies

Topic #2: Combining Lean Six Sigma and Agile Software Development by Dr. Samuel Prasad, PhD, CSQE

Topic #3: How Lean Six Sigma was used to take a government agency to ISO 9001:2008 Certification by Owen Ramsay, BS, MS, RABQSA-LA, CQA, CQE, CMQ-OE, CSSBB

Topic #4: Using Lean Tools for FOD Critical Compliance by Brian Ascetta, BS, MBA, CSSBB, Lean Shingo Prize Certified Lean Bronze Sensei, APICS Certified SCP, PE

Activity: Develop specifications for four catapult design variables that will result in consistently launching a ball exactly 96 inches (2.44 M). by Brian Ascetta, BS, MBA, CSSBB, PE

Since most of the members attending this symposium are practicing quality professionals, the case studies presented will hopefully provide insights on how to better guide and support your organization’s Lean Six Sigma efforts.

Please join us at Hofstra University’s Cultural Center Theater on March 30th at 8:00 am for a Continental breakfast prior to commencing the symposium.

QMD Leadership in Place for 2012

The new Quality Management Division Leadership Team is in place and ready to serve our members in 2012. Major changes in the world economy, along with the global emphasis on Quality have prompted revised tactics to support our strategic goals of providing value to our members. The Leadership Team recognized that many business decisions related to Quality are now being overridden by economic issues. QMD has adjusted the traditional tactics previously utilized for engaging members and providing value to them.

In 2012, there will not be a formal two-day quality conference. Instead, QMD will co-sponsor several regional events, both domestically and internationally. There will be featured speakers from QMD at the following regional events: Toronto, Boston, WCQI, and Audit Division’s conference in Augusta, GA. The bi-monthly e-blast featuring articles prepared by subject matter experts on topics of national and international interest to quality professionals will continue. For 2012, QMD will reach further into the international community of subject matter experts to provide a global perspective on current quality topics.

Please take a couple of minutes to review the results of the quality management new member survey. This survey contains the responses of 127 new QMD members for October and November 2011. The QMD leadership team will use this survey as a basis for our future member engagement tactics. The new members who participated in the book drawing will be receiving their books shortly. Thank you to all of you who took time to share your goals of QMD membership with us.

The QMD Leadership Team is a dynamic and diverse team of professionals dedicated to advancing the knowledge and application of quality in our global society. The leadership team strives to maintain a balance of established QMD leadership experience with those who are eager to learn and contribute to the Quality profession.

Four of the current QMD leadership team members just received the prestigious recognition of ASQ Fellow for their commitment and dedication to Quality. Jan Tucker, Vice-Chair Membership, VOC, and the author for the new member survey; Denis Devos, International Liaison, who many of you will be hearing from as we solicit international subject matter experts; Dr. Denis Leonard, Editorial Review, the behind the scenes editor of the information that is printed in the monthly Quality Management Forum; and Dr. William Denney, a long serving QMD leadership team member who now advises QMD from the Words Of Wisdom perspective.

These are only four of the dedicated leadership team members.

To maintain the superior performance of this volunteer team, additional help from individuals who want to contribute, as well as to enhance their Quality skills and knowledge is much needed and greatly appreciated. If you feel this opportunity to contribute and learn fits your professional goals, please visit the call for volunteers link to contact the QMD leadership team.

QMD is pleased to announce a new book written

by Mark Druckmiller and JD Marhevko

This book is written by very determined and overworked parents of their son, Adam, an autistic child. Over the years since their son’s diagnosis of autism they have worked on treating the disease and the symptoms of autism by applying improvement processes to the situation. They have called their book A Sample Size of One based on what they know and what they have done with their son only. It is not that the specific treatments and things they do work exactly the first time, but the process is where they go and methodically do things, examine the results, and continue with the next steps…or not. The book explains things they have done with Adam (chronologically), with themselves, and the processes they have used to help treat his disease.
